Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2013)<\/p>\n

Released just months before his death, this biographical film serves as a eulogy for the former South African President<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Idris Elba will always be Stringer Bell<\/a>, but he\u2019s also great as the eponymous detective Luther<\/a>, and has\u00a0become a tentpole fixture in\u00a0Thor<\/em> (2011), Prometheus<\/em> (2012), Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance<\/em> (2012), Pacific Rim<\/em> (2013) and Thor: The Dark World<\/em> (2013).\u00a0 He\u2019s fantastic in this film and his delivery of Mandela\u2019s famous “I am Prepared to Die”<\/a>\u00a0speech\u00a0is transcendent.<\/p>\n

But as great as Elba is, Naomie Harris is better as Winnie Mandela<\/a>, managing to make us both sympathize with her struggle and condemn her zealotry.\u00a0 Harris was Tia Dalma \/ Calypso in the second and third films in the Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> series and Eve Moneypenny in Skyfall<\/em> (2012), but shows a lot more potential here.<\/p>\n

Despite the solid performances of the two leads, the film doesn’t work as well as it should. \u00a0Mandela\u2019s life was so big, it feels rushed in a 150 minute movie, and\u00a0the film occasionally wanders into hagiography.<\/p>\n

This is a great starting point to an understanding of one of the most important men of the later twentieth century, but it\u2019s too one-sided to be definitive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
