Anne Rice<\/p>\n The film version of her novel Interview with the Vampire<\/em>\u00a0was a huge deal in the 1990s and revitalized the vampire genre (think Twilight<\/em>), but subsequent film adaptations didn’t materialize and her career never again reached those heights.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 40. Charlie Watts<\/p>\n Longtime drummer for The Rolling Stones.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 39. Betty Lynn<\/p>\n Thelma Lou in\u00a0The\u00a0Andy\u00a0Griffith<\/i> Show.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 38. Jessica Walter<\/p>\n In the 1970s, she memorably played a deranged stalker in Eastwood’s Play Misty for Me.<\/em> After the role of a lifetime (Lucille Bluth in Arrested<\/em> Development) ended in the 2000s, she extended her career as the voice of Mallory Archer (a character clearly inspired by Lucille).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 37. Peter Scolari<\/p>\n In Bosom Buddies<\/em>, he was the Andrew Ridgely to Tom Hanks’ George Michael. Aside from his position as Hanks’ bestie, he\u00a0starred in the TV version of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Honey, I Shrunk the Kids<\/em> and had a memorable late career turn in <\/span>Girls<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 36. James Michael Tyler<\/p>\n As Gunther, he was background noise on one of the biggest TV shows of the early twenty first century: a show still relevant enough to warrant a highly rated reunion special twenty years later.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 35. Tommy Kirk<\/p>\n Star of Disney classics Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, The Absent Minded-Professor,\u00a0<\/em>and (one of my personal favorites)\u00a0The Monkey’s Uncle<\/em>. His homosexuality derailed his career, and he did a lot of horrible, under the radar stuff afterwards, but for a brief moment in the middle of the twentieth century, he was the male counterpart to Annette Funicello.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 34. Sonny Chiba<\/p>\n I haven’t seen a lot of his early work, although Tarantino is a huge fan. Jules’ speech in Pulp Fiction<\/em> was inspired by one of Chiba’s films, and Tarantino would later cast him in Kill Bill.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 33. Jean-Paul Belmondo<\/p>\n The French version of Steve McQueen; he was in several of the definitive films of the French New Wave, and if he had been willing to accept Hollywood’s repeated offers, I think he would have been at least as big a name as Marcello Mastroianni.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 32. Gavin MacLeod<\/p>\n The Mary Tyler Moore Show<\/em>.\u00a0The Love Boat.\u00a0<\/em>A couple of film credits including\u00a0Pork Chop Hill, Kelly’s Heroes<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0The Sand Pebbles<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 31. Yaphet Kotto<\/p>\n Bond villain in\u00a0Live and Let Die; <\/em>casualty\u00a0in Alien<\/em>; and Lt. Al Giardello in\u00a0Homicide: Life on the Street<\/em> (an underappreciated gem from the late twentieth century).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 30. Robert Downey Sr.<\/p>\n An underground filmmaker who peaked in the 1960s (Putney Swope<\/em>). Paul Thomas Anderson liked him enough to give him small roles in Boogie Nights<\/em> and Magnolia,<\/em> but his biggest contribution to popular culture is his son.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 29. Richard Rush<\/p>\n It took him nine years to make, but he was Oscar nominated for writing and directing Stunt Man<\/em> (1980). Unfortunately, his career never really took off after that.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 28. Jane Powell<\/p>\n Star of MGM musicals in the 1950s, including Royal Wedding<\/em> and\u00a0Seven Brides for Seven Brothers<\/em>. In her late career, she played Jason Seaver’s mom in Growing Pains<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 27. Jackie Mason<\/p>\n His standup career seemed destined for greatness until he allegedly gave Ed Sullivan the finger during a televised set and the powerful Sullivan blackballed him. In spite of this setback, he counts <\/span>The Jerk, History of the World Part I<\/em>, the notoriously bad Caddyshack II<\/em>, and Rabbi Krustofski amongst his credits.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 26. Norman Lloyd<\/p>\n He worked with Orson Welles and Hitchcock then found late career success with St. Elsewhere <\/em>and Dead Poets Society<\/em>. He lived over a century and continued working until to the end (Trainwreck<\/em>) in a remarkable career.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 25. Art LaFleur<\/p>\n Character actor extraordinaire. Wargames, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot<\/em>, Maverick,<\/em> and The Tooth Fairy in The Santa Clause\u00a0<\/em>movies.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 24. Willie Garson<\/p>\n Stanford on Sex and the City<\/em>. Much like James Michael Tyler, he was a sidekick on an iconic TV show, but his character was more than background.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 23. Jean-Marc Vall\u00e9e<\/p>\n Exploded on the scene with\u00a0Dallas Buyers Club.\u00a0<\/em>Then a fruitful collaboration with Reese Witherspoon which produced\u00a0Wild<\/em> and the miniseries sensation\u00a0Big Little Lies<\/em>. He followed up with the Amy Adams vehicle\u00a0Sharp Objects<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 22. Charles Grodin<\/p>\n Early success with a small role in Rosemary’s Baby<\/em>. The Heartbreak Kid<\/em> with Elaine May and Real Life<\/em> with Albert Brooks. Personal favorites: The Great Muppet Caper<\/em> and\u00a0The Incredible Shrinking Woman<\/em>. Midnight Run<\/em> with De Niro. Known to countless Gen-Xers for Beethoven<\/em>. He unexpectedly walked away from a thriving Hollywood career to become a political talk show host. After his show ended, he took a long hiatus, before a brief, late career reemergence as a character actor (with an especially memorable turn in Louie<\/em>).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 21. Norm Macdonald<\/p>\n One of the driest and cerebral comedians. His run as Weekend Update<\/em> anchor and his appearance as Burt Reynolds (Turd Ferguson) in Celebrity Jeopardy!<\/em> sketches are legendary. His body of work is not as large as some of his contemporaries, but his influence is enormous.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 20. Larry McMurtry<\/p>\n His novels were adapted into\u00a0Hud, <\/em>The Last Picture Show<\/em> (which won him an Oscar),\u00a0Terms of Endearment<\/em>, and\u00a0Lonesome Dove, <\/em>and he adapted Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain, <\/em>winning another Oscar.<\/p>\n Reminiscent of Faulkner’s work regarding the South, his work chronicled the intersection of the old and new West.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 19. Michael Apted<\/p>\n Director of a Bond film (The World is Not Enough<\/em>), The Voyage of the Dawn Treader<\/em>, Gorillas in the Mist<\/em>, and Coal Miner’s Daughter<\/em>. His greatest achievement is the Up<\/em> series, which he took over with the second installment in 1970 and continued to shepherd through 63 Up<\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 18. Helen McCrory<\/p>\n Debuted in Interview with the Vampire<\/em>. Cherie Blair in The Queen<\/em> and The Special Relationship<\/em>. Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter<\/em> films. George M\u00e9li\u00e8s wife in Hugo.<\/em> Skyfall<\/em>. Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 17. Lina Wertm\u00fcller<\/p>\n First female nominee for the Academy Award for Best Director. Her films include: Seven Beauties, Love & Anarchy, <\/em>and Swept Away <\/em>(the good one, not the crappy Madonna remake). Received an Honorary Oscar in 2019.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 16. George Segal<\/p>\n After his electrifying, Oscar nominated turn in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, <\/em>he was an unlikely leading man in the 1970s: A Touch of Class<\/em>, Born to Win<\/em>, The Hot Rock<\/em>, Blume in Love<\/em>, California Split<\/em>, Fun with Dick and Jane<\/em>. Afterwards, he transitioned to supporting roles in in Look Who’s Talking<\/em> and The Mirror Has Two Faces<\/em>.<\/p>\n Consistently working, he was in two long running TV shows: Just Shoot Me!\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Goldbergs,<\/em> recurring in the latter up until his death.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 15. Bertrand Tavernier<\/p>\n A Sunday in the Country<\/em>. Coup de Torchon<\/em>. Round Midnight<\/em>. Life and Nothing But<\/em>. His films are slow, ponderous affairs. He loved asking big questions, and I loved him for it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 14. Michael K. Williams<\/p>\n He was great in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Night of, When They See Us,<\/em> and Lovecraft Country,<\/em> but <\/span>The Wire<\/em> is his legacy. Omar Little is in contention for the best TV character of all time.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 13. Larry King<\/p>\n For thirty years, he was the face of CNN where his nightly interview show was influential and ubiquitous. A shameless self-promoter, he parlayed this into numerous cameos as himself in various film and TV projects.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 12. Olympia Dukakis<\/p>\n Career highlights include Death Wish<\/em>, Steel Magnolias<\/em>, Look Who’s Talking<\/em>, Mr. Holland’s Opus<\/em>, Mighty Aphrodite,<\/em> and, of course, her fantastic turn in Moonstruck<\/em>, which won her an Oscar.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 11. Richard Donner<\/p>\n Directed Superman<\/em>, all four Lethal Weapon<\/em> movies, The Goonies,<\/em>\u00a0The Omen,<\/em>\u00a0Scrooged,<\/em>\u00a0The Toy<\/em> (a personal favorite from my childhood), Maverick,<\/em> and\u00a0Conspiracy Theory<\/em>. Additionally, he shepherded the X-Men<\/em> franchise to the screen.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 10. Dean Stockwell<\/p>\n A child actor in the 1940s (The Boy with the Green Hair<\/em>\u00a0and Gentleman’s Agreement<\/em>). Cannes awards winning actor in the 1960s (Long Day’s Journey into Night<\/em>). He starred in Sons and Lovers;<\/em>\u00a0Paris, Texas;<\/em>\u00a0The Player;<\/em>\u00a0Beverly Hills Cop II;<\/em>\u00a0and Air Force One<\/em>. He collaborated with David Lynch in Dune<\/em> and Blue Velvet<\/em>. Nominated for an Oscar for Married to the Mob<\/em>. Late career success in sci-fi (Quantum Leap<\/em> and Battlestar Galactica<\/em>).<\/p>\n Friends with Dennis Hopper and lived as a hippie for awhile in the 1960s.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 9. John Madden<\/p>\n Won a Superbowl as a coach of the Raiders and has the highest winning percentage of any coach with 100 games or more.<\/p>\n Legendary career was a broadcaster, and lent his name to one of the most famous videogames of all time.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 8. Hal Holbrook<\/p>\n He won a Tony Award for performing as Mark Twain in a one man show in 1966 and continued playing the role for over fifty years. Deep Throat in All the President’s Men<\/em>. Five Emmys and awarded the National Humanities Medal by George W. Bush.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 7. Cicely Tyson<\/p>\n In her sixty year career, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an honorary Oscar, a Tony award (when she was ninety-one), an Oscar nomination for Sounder<\/em>, and three Emmys.<\/p>\n Famously married to Miles Davis, she was still performing in the final years of her life (Tyler Perry’s A Fall from Grace<\/em> and How to Get Away with Murder<\/em>).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 6. Ned Beatty<\/p>\n Otis in Superman<\/em>. Oscar nominated for Network<\/em>. Made everyone scared of squealing like a pig in Deliverance<\/em>. All the President’s Men<\/em>.\u00a0The Toy<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>The Incredible Shrinking Woman<\/em>. <\/span>Rudy<\/em>. <\/span>Back to School<\/em>. Lotso in <\/span>Toy Story 3<\/em>. Detective Bolander in <\/span>Homicide: Life on the Street<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 5. Ed Asner<\/p>\n Carl Fredricksen in Up;\u00a0<\/em>Santa in Elf<\/em>. He earned a place in the pantheon as Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show<\/em>. One of the few actors to win an Emmy for Comedy and Drama for the same role. He starred in Roots,\u00a0<\/em>was one of the most outspoken liberal actors of the age, and continued to work until shortly before his death in\u00a0Cobra Kai<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. Betty White<\/p>\n Mary Tyler Moore Show. The Golden Girls<\/em>.\u00a0Lake Placid<\/em>.\u00a0The Proposal<\/em>. A legendary guest hosting stint on\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>. 5 Emmy wins. \u00a0She was beloved by everyone.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 3. Christopher Plummer<\/p>\n Two Emmys. One Oscar.
