During filming, the cast and crew\u00a0wish the interminable, troubled shoot would end.<\/p>\n<p>In a charming bit of camera winking meta narrative, the director, Francois Truffaut, plays Ferrand, the director of the film within the film.<\/p>\n<p>Before directing the seminal French New Wave film, <em>The 400 Blows <\/em>(1959). Truffaut began his career as a film critic, developing\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auteur_theory\">auteur theory<\/a>, which positioned the director as the primary artistic engine in the filmmaking process.<\/p>\n<p>This love letter to the collaborative process of movie making, challenges his theory.\u00a0Rather than the product of a deeply personal vision of a singular director, <i>Je Vous Pr\u00e9sente Pam\u00e9la\u00a0<\/i>is the result of an unpredictable collaboration, the director&#8217;s vision filtered through fights over actor motivation and budgets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fimages.fineartamerica.com%2Fimages%2Fartworkimages%2Fmediumlarge%2F3%2Fpanic-in-the-streets-movie-poster-1950-stars-on-art.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=d9d4a00592265e8f08e102e623ebb79ca6dffa4bbc8f9bbc9796f93d0e590455\" alt=\"''Panic in the Streets'' movie poster 1950 Mixed Media by Movie World ...\" width=\"312\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0042832\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Panic in the Streets<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1950)<\/p>\n<p>When Kochak is killed by gangster Blackie (Jack Palance), the coroner finds elements of bacteria in his blood and realizes Kochak was carrying \u201cpneumonic plague.\u201d \u00a0The film becomes a mad dash to identify his murderers to avoid a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Palance was nominated for an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/25th_Academy_Awards\">Academy Award for his work in <em>Shane<\/em> (1953)<\/a>\u00a0forty years before he won for his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/64th_Academy_Awards\">work as Curly Washburn<\/a>.\u00a0 He played <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Che!_(1969_film)\">Fidel Castro<\/a>\u00a0in <em>Che!\u00a0<\/em>(1969)\u00a0and had a small role in Tim Burton\u2019s <em>Batman<\/em> (1989), but\u00a0he\u2019s most famous for his impromptu one-handed push-ups at the 64th Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jack Palance Wins Supporting Actor: 1992 Oscars\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AGxL5AFzzMY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zero Mostel has a small role as Raymond Fitch, a gangster associate of Blackie. Mostel made an indelible impression in\u00a0<em>The Producers<\/em> (1968), but his film career was limited because of his refusal to testify before the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_Un-American_Activities_Committee\">House Un-American Activites Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An early proponent of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Method_acting\">The Method<\/a>, Eliza Kazan revolutionized film acting with the freedom he allowed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Streetcar_Named_Desire_(1951_film)\">Marlon Brando<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_of_Eden_(film)\">James Dean<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Face_in_the_Crowd_(film)\">Andy Griffith<\/a>, but, unlike Mostel, Kazan gave friendly testimony to HUAC.
