Sacheen Littlefeather<\/p>\n She accepted the 1972 Oscar for Best Actor on behalf of Marlon Brando who was attempting to highlight the cruel way the US had treated Native Americans. His point was, in essence, made for him in the cruel way the audience reacted to Ms. Littlefeather.<\/p>\n Fifty years later, the Academy formally apologized to her for her treatment, just in time for her death.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 75. Dan Vitale<\/p>\n One season in the cast of SNL<\/em> in the mid 1980s.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 74. Gallagher<\/p>\n Incredibly, he managed to make a career out of the stage show equivalent of David Letterman’s Stupid Human Tricks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 73. Mills Lane<\/p>\n He parlayed his brief moment in the sun as the referee in the infamous boxing match between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson into appearances in Celebrity Death Match<\/em> and a stint as a TV show judge.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 72. Franco Harris<\/p>\n His hard-nosed play helped the Steelers to four Super Bowl titles and he was the central figure in one of the most famous plays in NFL history, the Immaculate Reception.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 71. Jules Bass<\/p>\n With Arthur Rankin Jr., he gave us the holiday staples, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer<\/em> (1964) and Frosty the Snowman<\/em> (1969), the animated version of The Hobbit<\/em> (1977) and the cult film The Last Unicorn<\/em> (1982).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 64. Pat Carroll<\/p>\n She earned an Emmy for her pioneering work in the television show Caesar’s Hour<\/em>.<\/p>\n No one could pick her out of a lineup, but everyone under the age of 45 is familiar with her work as Ursula in The Little Mermaid<\/em> (1989).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 55. Taylor Hawkins<\/p>\n He was the drummer for the Foo Fighters, one of the most lasting legacies of the Seattle rock scene.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 54. Monica Vitti<\/p>\n She rose to prominence as the muse of Italian auteur Michelangelo Antonioni. After their relationship ended, she turned to comedies, and was successful, but never captured the imagination of American audiences in the same way again.<\/p>\n Her legacy endures as the prototypical image of a woman in arthouse cinema.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 52. Jean-Louis Trintignant<\/p>\n A lion of French cinema. He worked with Kie\u015blowski, Rohmer, Haneke, Costa Gavras, and Vadim.<\/p>\n Sadly, he never penetrated beyond arthouses in the US.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 51. Nichelle Nichols<\/p>\n Her role as Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek<\/em> broke barriers and inspired countless girls to pursue a career in science.<\/p>\n Her legacy is tremendous: numerous real life scientists and technological advancements rest on her shoulders.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 50. Henry Silva<\/p>\n One of the original gangsters in\u00a0Ocean’s Eleven<\/em> (1960).\u00a0<\/em>He had a long career playing mobsters and two-bit criminals. After\u00a0Manchurian\u00a0Candidate<\/i>\u00a0(1962) and Dick Tracy\u00a0<\/em>(1990) he finished up with a cameo in the 2001 Ocean’s Eleven\u00a0<\/em>remake.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 49. Robert Morse<\/p>\n He won Tonys in the original production of\u00a0How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying<\/em> (before starring in the film adaptation) and as Truman Capote\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0Tru.\u00a0<\/em>He reprised the Capote role for television and won an Emmy.<\/p>\n The Loved One<\/em> based on the Evelyn Waugh novel is a wickedly funny black comedy about the funeral business.<\/p>\n He was cast as the Wizard of Oz in\u00a0Wicked,\u00a0<\/em>but quit before its initial Broadway run.<\/p>\n To most though, he will be remembered for his late in life turn as Bertram Cooper in one of the most critically praised TV shows of the 21st century: Mad Men<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 48. Leslie Jordan<\/p>\n He was funny as Beverly Leslie in\u00a0Will and Grace, <\/em>and found unexpected cultural relevance during the COVID 19 pandemic via his Instagram account. He was a reliable performer (in small doses) when you needed an over the top kitschy presence.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 47. Emilio Delgado<\/p>\n Forty years as Luis on\u00a0Sesame Street<\/em>. His face is ingrained in the consciousness of countless Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 46. Bob McGrath<\/p>\n A forty year career on Sesame Street. <\/em>Millions of children grew up with him in their lives. While his name may fade from memory, his face is certain to be remembered for a long time.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 45. Loretta Lynn<\/p>\n A legendary career in country music well before it was mainstream. She was the definitive female country singer for a generation.<\/p>\n The movie based on her life,\u00a0<\/em>Coal Miner’s Daughter<\/em> which won Sissy Spacek an Oscar, was released in 1980 and she lived another lifetime after that.<\/p>\n Country Music Hall of Fame. ACM Artist of the Decade in the 1970s. 3 Grammys. 24 number one hits.<\/p>\n Weirdly, she never ventured into acting, unlike most of her (primarily male) contemporaries.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 44. Meat Loaf<\/p>\n Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em>\u00a0(1975). Fight Club <\/em>(1999). “I’d Do Anything for Love.”\u00a0Spice World<\/em>\u00a0(1997). Leap of Faith\u00a0<\/em>(1990).\u00a0And an all time stage name.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 43. Jerry Lee Lewis<\/p>\n One of the seminal voices of early rock and roll, exemplifying the blurred line between early rock and country. His tumultuous personal life kept him from being as huge as he could have been (he married his 13 year old cousin), but his performances were so manic and his influence so vast, they made a biopic about him in 1989 starring Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 42. Louise Fletcher<\/p>\n A consistent career as a character actress for nearing sixty years.<\/span><\/p>\n Exorcist II: The Heretic<\/em> (1977),\u00a0The Cheap Detective<\/i> (1978),\u00a0Brainstorm<\/em> (1983),\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> (1984), Flowers in the Attic <\/em>(1987),\u00a0The\u00a0Player<\/i> (1992),\u00a02 Days in the Valley<\/em> (1996), Cruel<\/em> Intentions<\/em> (1999). Recurring roles in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Shameless<\/em>.<\/p>\n However, her lasting contribution is her seminal role as Nurse Ratched in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest<\/em>\u00a0(1975), winning an obvious Oscar. She was phenomenal. I’ve rarely had a more visceral reaction to a character.<\/p>\n She was dependable background noise, but one time she briefly shined as bright as anyone.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 41. Bob Saget<\/p>\n Playing Danny Tanner on\u00a0Full House<\/em> endeared him to a generation as a safe, dependable dad.\u00a0Hosting\u00a0America’s Funniest Home Videos<\/em> made him an ubiquitous fixture in American households. The blue comedy of his standup was, to many, an acceptable tradeoff for being such a steady presence in our lives.<\/p>\n He was a part of the fabric of our consciousness for thirty years and recently competed on The Masked Singer<\/em> showing he was a) still relevant and b) didn’t think of himself as above reproach.<\/p>\n Everyone knew who he was, and no one had anything bad to say about him. Was he the most talented performer? No. But he may have been the most dependable.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 39. Sally Kellerman<\/p>\n A frequent collaborator of Robert Altman (most famously as Hot Lips in M*A*S*H<\/em>), a memorable role in Back to School <\/em>(1986), and the voice of a muppet in one of the preeminent films of my childhood: Follow that Bird\u00a0<\/em>(1985).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 38. Vin Scully<\/p>\n The voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers for half a century. He was the prototypical baseball commentator and influenced countless others.<\/p>\n Even if you don’t know his name, if you close your eyes and imagine a baseball game, there’s a decent chance you hear his voice.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 37. Joe Turkel<\/p>\n One of the few frequent collaborators of Stanley Kubrick, his turn as the mysterious bartender in The Shining\u00a0<\/em>is his claim to fame.<\/p>\n Additionally, he played a pivotal role in\u00a0Blade Runner<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 36. Tony Sirico<\/p>\n A key role in one of the most beloved television shows of the 21st century: The Sopranos<\/em>. Paulie Walnuts was always fascinating, frequently stealing scenes from the show’s stars.<\/p>\n In addition, he had an unexpected friendship with Woody Allen and appeared in several of his films.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 35. Gregory Itzin<\/p>\n A memorable, brief role in\u00a0Airplane!\u00a0<\/em>A guest spot on\u00a0Friends<\/em>. A part in the cult classic\u00a0Murder One<\/em>.\u00a0Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em> (1998) and several roles in the\u00a0Star Trek\u00a0<\/em>universe.<\/p>\n However, all anyone will remember is his pivotal role as President Charles Logan in 24<\/em>. Logan seemed unbelievably evil then, but in light of how we see the US Presidency now, he seems quaint.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 34. Mary Alice<\/p>\n An Emmy for I’ll Fly Away<\/em>. A recurring role in A Different World<\/em>. A Tony for\u00a0Fences. Bonfire of the Vanities\u00a0<\/em>(1990), Awakenings <\/em>(1990), Malcolm X<\/em> (1992). A career capping role in The Matrix<\/em> series as The Oracle after Gloria Foster died exposed her to perhaps her widest audience.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 33. Anne Heche<\/p>\n After a start in soap operas on Another World,<\/em> she exploded onto the public scene in the late 1990s. Wag the Dog<\/em> (1997). Romantic lead opposite Harrison Ford in\u00a0Six Days, Seven Nights<\/em>\u00a0(1997). Marion Crane in the spectacular failure of Gus Van Sant’s shot for shot remake of Psycho\u00a0<\/em>(1998). I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em> (1997). Volcano<\/em> (1997). After her film career peaked in the 1990s, she was constantly working on TV and Broadway. Earning both an Emmy and a Tony nomination.<\/p>\n In the public eye, however, her career was secondary to her tumultuous personal life. She was in relationships with Lindsey Buckingham and Steve Martin, but her late 1990s relationship with Ellen Degeneres catapulted her to fame. After their split she married Colman Lafoon and had a child with one of her costars, James Tupper.<\/p>\n She was open about her mental health struggles, her family’s dysfunction, and their displeasure with her relationship with Degeneres.<\/p>\n In the last years of her career, she made a memorable appearance on\u00a0Dancing with the Stars.<\/em><\/p>\n Her unusual death only served to cement the public perception of her.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 32. Kirstie Alley<\/p>\n Look Who’s Talking\u00a0<\/em>was an unexpected phenomenon in the late 1980s, and she had a pivotal role in one of the best\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek\u00a0<\/em>movies (<\/span>Wrath of Khan<\/em>).\u00a0<\/span>She had the unenviable task of replacing Shelley Long’s Diane on\u00a0Cheers,<\/em>\u00a0yet somehow managed to reinvigorate the show in a way which ensured its legacy.<\/p>\n Second place on Dancing with the Stars<\/em> and an appearance on\u00a0The Masked Singer<\/em>.<\/p>\n She was constantly on our televisions for three decades (including\u00a0Veronica’s Closet<\/em>, Fat Actress<\/em> etc.)<\/p>\n After Cruise and Travolta, she’s arguably the third most prominent Scientologist.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 31. tWitch<\/p>\n He parlayed a second place finish on So You\u00a0Think You Can Dance?,\u00a0<\/i>into a sidekick role on\u00a0The Ellen Degeneres Show<\/em>. For a period in the 2010s, her show was as ubiquitous as any program in America.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 30. Stuart Margolin<\/p>\n Two Emmy wins for his work in\u00a0Rockford Files<\/em>. His career peaked in the 1980s with roles in\u00a0Death Wish<\/em> and\u00a0S.O.B.\u00a0<\/em>(an unheralded gem).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 29. Irene Cara<\/p>\n Fame <\/em>(1980) and the subsequent soundtrack catapulted her to stardom. Post 1980s she worked steadily, but never matched the dizzying heights of her early career.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 28. Fred Ward<\/p>\n Escape from Alcatraz\u00a0<\/em>(1977). Gus Grissom in\u00a0The Right Stuff\u00a0<\/em>(1983). Big Business<\/em> (1988).\u00a0<\/em>The title character in the cult hit,\u00a0Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins\u00a0<\/em>(1985). Gilbert Gottfried<\/p>\n Few people try to craft an annoying stage persona, even fewer make a career of it. A more likable version of Tony Clifton, Gottfried is the gold standard, eventually morphing into a beloved pop culture fixture.<\/p>\n The Aflac commercials and his memorable turn as Iago the Parrot made him an ubiquitous presence.\u00a0Problem Child 1<\/em> and 2<\/em> endeared him to Generation X.<\/p>\n Even his failures were legendary: his 9\/11 joke at Hugh Hefner’s roast, his jokes at the Emmys about Pee Wee Herman’s masturbation arrest, and the infamous “You Fool!” episode of Hollywood Squares.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 24. Howard Hesseman<\/p>\n WKRP in Cincinnati<\/em>.\u00a0Head of the Class<\/em>.\u00a0One Day at a Time<\/em>.<\/p>\n Shampoo<\/em> (1975). The Sunshine Boys <\/em>(1975). Silent Movie<\/em> (1976). The Jerk <\/em>(1979). Doctor Detroit<\/em> (1983) (a film I have a personal affinity for). Clue <\/em>(1985). This is Spinal Tap <\/em>(1984). Flight of the Navigator <\/em>(1986). After the 1980s his career stalled significantly, but he’ll always be instantly recognizable to Generation X.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 21. Mikhail Gorbachev<\/p>\n The birthmark is instantly recognizable and parodied. As the last leader of the Soviet Union before the end of the Cold War, he was the face of America’s enemy during a period of time when patriotic fervor was extremely high.<\/p>\n He was a frequent presence on America television and his image still represents a very specific time and vibe in American history. Very few leaders on the international stage have that sort of penetration into American culture.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 20 Olivia Newton-John<\/p>\n Five number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and four Grammys. After a successful pop career, she ventured into film and starred in the iconic Grease\u00a0<\/em>(1978), the kind of massively successful, culture penetrating hit most only dream of achieving.<\/p>\n She went on to star in the less well received, cult hit in\u00a0Xanadu\u00a0<\/em>(1980), but post mid-1980s, her career never reached the same heights again.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 19. Christine McVie<\/p>\n She was a founding member of one of the most important bands to emerge from the 1970s, Fleetwood Mac. While she was never as famous as her bandmate Stevie Nicks, McVie was just as important to the band’s success.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 18. Paul Sorvino<\/p>\n Goodfellas\u00a0<\/em>(1990). A Southern evangelist in Oh, God!<\/em>\u00a0(1977). Starred in a season of Law and Order<\/em>. A Touch of Class <\/em>(1973), Reds\u00a0<\/em>(1981). Bruce Willis’ dad in Moonlighting<\/em>. Henry Kissinger in Oliver Stone’s Nixon\u00a0<\/em>(1995). He was still working consistently in the last years of his life.<\/p>\n As reliable a character actor as they come.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 17. Barbara Walters<\/p>\n She was one of the faces of television journalism for more than four decades. She started on\u00a0The Today Show,<\/em>\u00a0became one of the first women to anchor a network news program, and pioneered a new era of interview journalism. Then, in a rare third act, she created\u00a0The View<\/em>, a midday blend of journalism and entertainment still going strong in its third decade. Additionally her annual program profiling the most fascinating people of the previous year helped shape popular opinion.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 16. Benedict XVI<\/p>\n He followed Pope John Paul II as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Ascending to the papacy late in life, he retired after only eight years as the spiritual leader for hundreds of millions of people.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 15.
