{"id":167,"date":"2014-03-20T18:25:29","date_gmt":"2014-03-20T18:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tenkmovies.com\/?p=167"},"modified":"2021-02-26T20:34:27","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T20:34:27","slug":"167","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tenkmovies.com\/?p=167","title":{"rendered":"An old man goes to a hell house and a flood breaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/venus_ver2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-168\" src=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/venus_ver2.jpg?w=203\" alt=\"Venus\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0489327\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Venus<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(2006)<\/p>\n<p>Elderly actor Maurice (Peter O&#8217;Toole) begins a relationship with Jessie, the much younger niece of his friend Ian.\u00a0 Jessie tolerates his amorous advances because she&#8217;s struggling financially and Maurice provides her with a steady income, while the pursuit of Jessie provides Maurice with a purpose and renewed vitality.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Griffiths, Leslie Phillips, and Vanessa Redgrave are excellent in supporting roles but this is Peter O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s film, and in his mid 70s, he still commands the screen.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a great scene where Maurice and his fellow actor friends are discussing another actor who recently died.\u00a0 They joke about how large his obituary was and wonder how impressive their own might be. This is especially poignant since O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s death in 2013 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/dec\/15\/peter-o-toole-dies-81\">his own impressive obituary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lawrence of Arabia <\/em>(1962) is beloved, but I prefer <em>Becket<\/em> (1964), or <em>The Lion in Winter<\/em> (1968), or the under appreciated, anarchic <em>The Ruling Class<\/em> (1972).<\/p>\n<p>This was O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s 8th nomination for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Academy_Award_for_Best_Actor\">Academy Award for Best Actor<\/a>.\u00a0 He failed to win any of them, losing this time to Forrest Whitaker for his work in <em>The Last King of Scotland<\/em>.\u00a0 Whitaker&#8217;s an excellent actor, but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idi_Amin\">Idi Amin<\/a> is a showy role, while O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s work in <em>Venus <\/em>is quiet and devastating.\u00a0 He&#8217;s not a lecherous old man so much as an old man vainly, valiantly fighting the tide of time.\u00a0 He wants to be young and alive again, but spends his working day playing dying men because this is what older actors do.\u00a0 When he complains to his ex-wife he is playing little more than a corpse, she teases him it &#8220;sounds like typecasting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This sweet film is a mirror image of <em>Harold and Maude<\/em> (1971), about a relationship between an elderly woman and a young man, and a fitting bon voyage to a legendary career.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/thebloodofjesus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-169\" src=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/thebloodofjesus.jpg?w=200\" alt=\"The Blood of Jesus\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0033406\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">The Blood of Jesus<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1941)<\/p>\n<p>When a woman is accidentally shot by her husband, her soul is tempted by the devil.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a big screen version of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hell_house\">hell house<\/a> staged by many churches during the Halloween season.\u00a0 In essence, the movie is saying: get right with God or go to hell.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its limited message, the film is never as heavy-handed as you&#8217;d expect and is actually inventive and whimsical in its depiction of the afterlife.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Race_film\">race film<\/a> starring, written, and directed by Spencer Williams (star of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amos_%27n%27_Andy\">Amos &#8216;n&#8217; Andy<\/a> <\/em>television program) was placed\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Film_Registry\">National Film Registry<\/a> in 1991, but I prefer <em>Cabin in the Sky<\/em> (1940), a film with similar themes which barely preceded this one directed by Vincente Minnelli and also featuring an all African-American cast, including Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Ethel Waters and Rochester Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/the_buffalo_creek_flood-_an_act_of_man.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/the_buffalo_creek_flood-_an_act_of_man.jpg?w=212\" alt=\"The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0495814\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">The Buffalo Creek Flood: An Act of Man<\/a>\u00a0<\/i>(1975)<\/p>\n<p>On February 26, 1972, Piston Coal Company&#8217;s dam burst four days after it had passed a federal safety inspection. The company claimed they were not responsible because it was an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Act_of_God\">act of God<\/a>.\u00a0 This film is critical of the position held by the company and inspectors of the dam.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s more like a well produced segment of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/60-minutes\/\">60 Minutes<\/a><\/em>, but this short documentary about the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buffalo_Creek_Flood\">Buffalo Creek Flood<\/a> was placed in the National Film Registry in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/a_scanner_darkly_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-173\" src=\"https:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/a_scanner_darkly_poster.jpg?w=206\" alt=\"S Scanner Darkly\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0405296\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">A Scanner Darkly<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(2006)<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is an undercover federal agent working to infiltrate the drug ring responsible for a new drug which causes intense hallucinations. He maintains his cover by wearing an artificial device which completely changes his appearance.\u00a0 To protect the integrity of the investigation, no one at police headquarters is aware of Acrtor&#8217;s true identity and his superior officer, Hank, also wears a device to conceal his identity.<\/p>\n<p>The plot gets complicated. No one is who they appear and the true subject of the investigation is only revealed at the end of the film.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Linklater is one of my favorite directors. <em>Dazed and Confused <\/em>(1993) is a great\u00a0portrait of life\u00a0on the verge of adulthood. \u00a0<em>Before Sunrise<\/em> (1995),<em> Before Sunset<\/em> (2004), and <em>Before Midnight<\/em> (2013) comprise one of the best and most honest cinematic looks at a relationship. <em>School of Rock<\/em> (2003) is an underrated family film. <em>Bernie<\/em> (2011) is a fun movie and contributed to the\u00a0career resurgence of Matthew McConaughey and the emergence of Jack Black as a dramatic actor.<\/p>\n<p>The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., who&#8217;s been on one of the biggest rolls of any actor since <em>Iron Man<\/em> (2008); Woody Harrelson,\u00a0who is good in everything (unbelievably the role of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woody_Boyd\">Woody Boyd<\/a> on <em>Cheers<\/em> may wind up being one of the least impressive things he does), and Winona Ryder.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a novel by revered science fiction author Philip K. Dick, the plot is trippy and the twists are well-earned.\u00a0 It&#8217;s trying to ask real questions about friendship, and identity, and purpose.\u00a0 The animation is good and serves the story well, especially the futuristic suits which allow you to change your physical appearance, although the animation in Linklater&#8217;s <em>Waking Life<\/em> (2001) is a little more effective.<\/p>\n<p>With this pedigree, I should have loved this film, but all I can muster is it&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n<p>Why didn&#8217;t it work for me?\u00a0 The troubled production of the film and the protracted animation phase stripped the movie of its soul.\u00a0 In <em>Waking Life<\/em>, the animation creates an artificial barrier which made the characters less real and this worked well\u00a0in a movie about dreams and philosophy.\u00a0 In this movie, the animation creates an\u00a0unnecessary additional barrier.\u00a0\u00a0<em>A Scanner Darkly<\/em>\u00a0is about identity: how we define ourselves and how we allow ourselves to be defined, particularly with addiction.
