One of them hides in the coffin as it&#8217;s loaded onto a train, and, once safely on board, sneaks out, steals the targeted jewels, then hides in the coffin.<\/p>\n<p>This fun, early heist film helped established many of the tropes of the genre.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Whole Dam Family and the Dam Dog\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RASy10MOAJ0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0235045\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">The Whole Dam Family and the Dam Dog<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Based on a pun often used by grade school children to show their burgeoning sophistication, this short is\u00a0too long, but it&#8217;s funny to think people were laughing about the difference between <em>dam<\/em>\u00a0and <em>damn<\/em>\u00a0one hundred years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lumiere.Brothers-Whole.Dam.Family.and.the.Dam.Dog.(1905)\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_ffo_rakc9w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0233909\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">I.B. Dam and the Whole Dam Family<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This improves on the other film about the Dam family in one important way: it&#8217;s much shorter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Le Diable Noir \/ The Black Imp (1905)\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u0AOPuus_So?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0215575\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">The Black Imp<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A demon (M\u00e9li\u00e8s)\u00a0finds a comfortable bed, and in order to force the tenant out of the room harasses him with multiple pranks, including making multiple chairs appear and disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Many of his films are excuses to show off the various tricks and optical illusions he&#8217;s learned, but this is one of the rare times M\u00e9li\u00e8s combines his arsenal of tricks, his fascination with the occult, and a straightforward narrative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Nihilist (1905) Short\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TifQGZiR-uI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/find?ref_=nv_sr_fn&amp;q=The+Nihilist&amp;s=all\">The Nihilist<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the Tsarists\u00a0imprison a man they suspect of conspiring against them, his family seeks revenge and joins the anti-Tsarist nihilist movement.<\/p>\n<p>While sympathetic to the plight of the bereaving family, this film emphatically condemns violence as a political tool. It&#8217;s fascinating to see an American film come down on the side of the Russian political class, and even more so to learn\u00a0the Nihilist movement employed\u00a0suicide bombing\u00a0one hundred years before Islamic extremism\u00a0adopted it as their modus operandi,\u00a0implying a link between the modern evil of terrorism and the political ideologies of the eighteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Night Before Christmas (1905)\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jjQ_1qJJWOk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0000565\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_7\">The Night Before Christmas<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After an unnamed family eats their Christmas dinner, the children are sent to bed, and, after several false starts, fall asleep.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Santa loads his sleigh and leads his reindeer from the North Pole to deliver their wares in some pretty impressive miniature work.<\/p>\n<p>The first film adaptation of Clement Moore&#8217;s famous poem\u00a0demonstrates how pliable and universal the 150 year old work remains. The poem&#8217;s deep association with our own personal, romanticized Ghosts of Christmas past gives this film a resonance it would not have otherwise. We may stop believing in Santa Clause, but most of us never stop believing in the magic of Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Living Playing Cards | 1905 | starring Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s | directed by Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s [Silent film]\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k9SUPRkKi-o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0135179\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">The Living Playing Cards<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>M\u00e9li\u00e8s is in his element: a magician performing card tricks. Here, he brings the cards to life, first the queen of hearts, then a king.
