Bram Stoker’s Dracula<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1992)<\/p>\n

This film was woefully miscast. Gary Oldman is so compelling as Count Dracula<\/a>\u00a0it’s hard not to root for him, while Keanu Reeves is so wooden as Jonathan Harker<\/a>\u00a0it’s difficult to believe he’s the hero of the film. \u00a0Outclassed by the actors around him, he’s unable to generate any interest in his character and we gravitate towards the much more interesting characters: Dracula\u00a0and Van Helsing<\/a>\u00a0(Anthony Hopkins).<\/p>\n

Richard I<\/a>,\u00a0Hannibal Lecter<\/a>, C.S. Lewis<\/a>,\u00a0Richard Nixon<\/a>, and Alfred Hitchcock<\/a>\u00a0are only a few of the iconic roles in Hopkin’s long and distinguished career.\u00a0 He’s adept at everything from small, quiet movies<\/a>,\u00a0to gory horror<\/a>, to blockbuster action films<\/a>. The movie would have been better if they’d focused on the\u00a0conflict between him and Dracula.<\/p>\n

Winona Ryder’s early career was a string of successes in Beetlejuice <\/em>(1988),<\/em>\u00a0Heathers<\/em> (1988), Edward Scissorhands<\/em>, and T<\/em>he Age of Innocence<\/em>\u00a0(1993), but her youthful appearance works against makes Dracula’s obsession with Mina Harker more creepy than scary.<\/p>\n

Francis Ford Coppola’s place in film history is secure with\u00a0The Godfather <\/em>(1972), The Godfather Part II <\/em>(1974), The Conversation <\/em>(1974),<\/em>\u00a0and Apocalypse Now <\/em>(1979).\u00a0 <\/em>But\u00a0since 1980, his films have been pedestrian.<\/p>\n

Eschewing computer generated effects and using traditional movie techniques as much as possible sets this film apart. And it makes good use of the immortality of vampires, but considering the cast and pedigree of those involved,\u00a0it should have been a great movie. There’s a lot to look at, but not much to see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
