Dennis the Menace<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(1993)<\/p>\n

After Home Alone 2: Lost\u00a0in New York\u00a0<\/em>(1992), John Hughes’\u00a0unparalleled decade-long success, which began in 1983 with\u00a0National Lampoon’s Vacation <\/em> in 1983, came to an end.\u00a0 His subsequent films failed to capture the magic of his earlier work and this movie, based on the long-running comic strip<\/a>, is no exception.<\/p>\n

Nick Castle is an interesting and eclectic performer.\u00a0 He directed this and\u00a0The Last Starfighter<\/em> (1987), wrote Escape from New York<\/em> (1981) and Hook<\/em> (1991), and starred as Michael Myers<\/a>\u00a0in the first Halloween\u00a0(<\/em>1978).<\/p>\n

Walter Matthau is Mr. Wilson, in yet another iteration of the cantankerous old man he’s become most famous for playing. Beginning with\u00a0The Odd Couple <\/em>(1968), and continuing with T<\/em>he Sunshine Boys <\/em>(1975), The Bad News Bears <\/em>(1976), and Grumpy Old Men <\/em>(1993), no other actor is as closely associated with crotchety.<\/p>\n

Christopher Lloyd is Switchblade Sam, a homeless drifter turned petty thief, who functions as a poor imitation of the Wet Bandits from the Hughes earlier\u00a0Home Alone <\/em>movies.\u00a0 Lloyd is a great comedic actor who will forever be remembered as Doc Brown<\/a>, but he’s had several other iconic roles including Klingon Commander Kruge<\/a>, Professor Plum<\/a>, and\u00a0Dr. Doom<\/a>.\u00a0 Nobody plays lovably, crazy better.<\/p>\n

Lloyd’s Back to the<\/em> Future<\/em> costar, Leah Thompson is Dennis’s mom Alice.\u00a0 Unfortunately, she isn’t given anything to do other than serve as background noise.<\/p>\n

Joan Plowright is Mrs. Wilson.\u00a0 Incredibly, the wife of legendary Shakespearean actor Sir Laurence Olivier<\/a>\u00a0starred in a movie based on a comic strip\u00a0five years after his death.<\/p>\n

The fantastic character actor Paul Winfield has a small role as the chief of police.<\/p>\n

This movie had a great pedigree: beloved source material, legendary writer, great cast, interesting director, but somehow it turned to crap.\u00a0 It borrowed too heavily from Home Alone<\/em> and unfortunately its titular star, Mason Gamble, didn’t have the natural charisma of Macaulay Culkin.\u00a0 It’s worth watching once, if you don’t have anything better to do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
