{"id":680,"date":"2014-04-15T04:04:11","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T04:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tenkmovies.wordpress.com\/?p=680"},"modified":"2021-02-19T16:51:07","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T16:51:07","slug":"abused-children-desperately-search-for-justice-and-philosophical-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tenkmovies.com\/?p=680","title":{"rendered":"Abused children desperately search for justice and philosophical truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/short_term_12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-686 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/short_term_12.jpg?w=202\" alt=\"Short Term 12 (2013)\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2370248\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Short Term 12<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2013)<\/p>\n<p>In this expansion of his earlier short film, Destin Cretton documents a group home for abused and forgotten kids who&#8217;ve been told they were worthless until they believed it.<\/p>\n<p>Grace (Brie Larson), a survivor of abuse and current counselor\u00a0at the home, must deal with unresolved feelings when newcomer Jayden reminds her of her own troubled past.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus (Keith Stanfield) who will be forced out of the shelter when he turns 18 and is afraid to leave the security of the only safe place he&#8217;s ever known.<\/p>\n<p>Mason (John Gallagher Jr.) is a fellow counselor and Grace&#8217;s long-term boyfriend who offers unqualified support only to be rebuffed as he gets too close.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Beatrix (best known as Rosa Diaz on<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Nine-Nine\">Brooklyn Nine-Nine<\/a><\/em>), is very funny as Jessica, one of the counselors at the center.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the bleak setting, this is a hopeful film which shows it&#8217;s possible to beat the odds and rise above the filth of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/405px-hannah_arendt_film_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-687 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/405px-hannah_arendt_film_poster.jpg?w=202\" alt=\"Hannah Arendt (2012)\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1674773\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Hannah Arendt<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2012)<\/p>\n<p>This is tough biographical film about the German-American political theorist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannah_Arendt\">Hannah Arendt<\/a>\u00a0who was\u00a0already a famous intellectual theorist when she agreed to cover the trial of notorious Nazi <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannah_Arendt\">Adolf Eichmann<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\">The New Yorker<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banality_of_evil#The_banality_of_evil\">the banality of evil<\/a>\u00a0was her attempt to reconcile the monster she expected with the non threatening man found. He was an anti-Semite, but these\u00a0impulses were subservient to\u00a0his desire to\u00a0advance his own status, and she believed his trial was a proxy\u00a0for the trial of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazism\">Nazism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the publication of her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eichmann_in_Jerusalem\">account of the trial<\/a>, Arendt became a pariah, losing many friends who accused her of sympathizing with Eichmann and defending the Nazi cause.<\/p>\n<p>The film is a continued exploration of her primary themes, the nature of evil and the consequences of honesty and courage, applied to her own life story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/desperately_seeking_susan_movie_poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-688 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/04\/desperately_seeking_susan_movie_poster.jpg?w=193\" alt=\"Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0089017\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Desperately Seeking Susan<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1985)<\/p>\n<p>Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) is fascinated by the messages Susan (Madonna) leaves and receives in the personal section of a New York City tabloid.\u00a0 When one message\u00a0mentions a meeting at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battery_Park\">Battery Park<\/a>, Roberta goes to meet her on a whim. In a convoluted\u00a0plot involving amnesia, stolen earrings, gangsters, and a midlife crisis, Roberta assumes Susan&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Metcalf, Aidan Quinn, comedian Steven Wright, and a young Giancarlo Esposito (later to become famous as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gus_Fring\">Gus Fring<\/a>)\u00a0have supporting roles.<\/p>\n<p>The film is a minor representative of a sub-genre of whimsical realist films from the 1980s which included <em>All of Me (<\/em>1984),\u00a0<em>The Golden Child<\/em> (1986), and <em>Big Trouble in Little China <\/em>(1986).\u00a0The tone is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Carroll\">Lewis Carroll<\/a>, but the look is<em> Mean Streets<\/em>\u00a0(1973) and<em> Saturday Night Fever<\/em>\u00a0(1977).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Short Term 12\u00a0(2013) In this expansion of his earlier short film, Destin Cretton documents a group home for abused and forgotten kids who&#8217;ve been told they were worthless until they believed it.
