Gilles is an artist in France in the 1970s.\u00a0 His friends are left-leaning political activists who expect him to join their protests.\u00a0 He has sympathy for their views, but their insistence he dedicate everything to the cause conflicts with his artistic commitment.<\/p>\n

This is a good movie about the struggle to balance individual ambition against the demands\u00a0of\u00a0friends, family, and love.<\/p>\n

Tabloid<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2010)<\/p>\n

In 1977, Joyce McKinney was accused of kidnapping Mormon missionary Kirk Anderson, chaining him to a bed, and raping him\u00a0multiple times\u00a0over a weekend.\u00a0She claimed they were in love, but the\u00a0Mormon church disapproved of their relationship and forced\u00a0him to lie.<\/p>\n

She was arrested, but escaped to America by posing as a Canadian musician.\u00a0The case of the “Manacled Mormon<\/a>” was a brief sensation in the British tabloids.<\/p>\n

In 2008, McKinney made headlines once again when she had her deceased dog cloned in Korea.<\/p>\n

Anderson declined to be interviewed, but McKinney was more than willing to talk about her experience.\u00a0 She continues to maintain her innocence, but she’s so coy and playful, there’s an undeniable sense she’s playing a game.<\/p>\n

One of the best documentary filmmakers, Errol Morris enthralls in this fun\u00a0movie about how a random story about sex can become a national obsession and briefly turn ordinary people into household names.<\/p>\n

Room 237<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2012)<\/p>\n

This documentary highlights a few of the endless number of conspiracy theories\u00a0surrounding The Shining<\/em>\u00a0(1980) by Stanley Kubrick.<\/p>\n

It’s an apology for mistreatment of Native Americans.<\/p>\n

It’s an admission Kubrick helped fake the Apollo lunar landing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s an allegorical film about the Holocaust<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The point of this movie is\u00a0not to uncover the true meaning behind the film, but to demonstrate how little intention matters in artistic endeavors. \u00a0Every film\u00a0is an individual experience. \u00a0One movie can be a thousand different things.<\/p>\n

This film suggests any attempt at criticism is glorified narcissism, empty words revealing more about the critic than the art.<\/p>\n

When we see the obsession of others on display,\u00a0our instincts are to highlight differences.\u00a0 They don’t have control; we do.\u00a0 We don’t let our obsessions run our lives; they do. We’re dedicated; their obsessed. But maybe the line between dedication and obsession is an\u00a0illusion, a lie we tell to convince ourselves we’re better than the people represented in this movie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
