A part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 <\/em>series, this documents the notorious\u00a0Detroit Pistons<\/a>\u00a0teams in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

I was surprised how normal Dennis Rodman<\/a>\u00a0seemed.\u00a0 No one could have\u00a0predicted\u00a0his name would become a byword for odd and unusual behavior.<\/p>\n

Professional sport needs more people like\u00a0Bill Laimbeer<\/a>\u00a0who revel in playing\u00a0the bad guy.<\/p>\n

Despite his accolades,\u00a0Isiah Thomas<\/a>\u00a0demanded constant validation.\u00a0 His performance in a losing effort on an injured ankle against the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>\u00a0in Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals<\/a>, is one of the most impressive displays\u00a0in basketball history, but leading his team to walk off the court before time expired in Game 4 of the 1991 Eastern Conference finals is one of the most embarrassing moments in the NBA history.<\/p>\n

After a 1987 game, a young Dennis Rodman said Larry Bird<\/a>\u00a0was overrated\u00a0because he was a white basketball player. Without knowing all the details, Thomas backed up his teammate. The ensuing controversy reminds us of the role\u00a0basketball has played in American race relations.<\/p>\n

I recommend this if you’re at all interested in the history of the NBA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Jack Hall’s son died from a drug overdose, the\u00a0World War\u00a0II veteran killed the man he felt was responsible.\u00a0 He was convicted for the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.\u00a0 This movie chronicles the hospice program at the Iowa prison where he spent his final days.<\/p>\n

Most prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment will end up like Jack: old and scared.\u00a0Regardless of how evil or violent any of these criminals may have been, they will get old, and feeble, and frail, and die.\u00a0 No one is frightening\u00a0on their deathbed.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to watch octogenarian Jack and not feel compassion, but does he deserve it?\u00a0 He intentionally ended someone’s life.\u00a0 Why should he be afforded a dignified death, when he was unwilling to afford one to his victim?\u00a0 Is compassion earned, or is\u00a0it inalienable?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
