What&#8217;s left is a dense movie which wildly speculates why Aristotle&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Second Book of Poetics<\/em> (describing the philosopher&#8217;s theory of comedy) was destroyed in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p>While flawed, it&#8217;s a tantalizing exploration of the power of laughter and the complex relationship between faith and science. It works because of our enduring love of conspiracy theories and peak Sean Connery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tigerstrypes.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F06%2FStandByMe.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=67a6132cb6c9bbcc47b67499cb469335e0dae0c09094f0c12312a0bf7ee8126f\" alt=\"Things That Bring Back Memories - &quot;Stand By Me&quot; #TTBBM\" width=\"413\" height=\"621\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0092005\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\"><em>Stand By Me<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When author Gordie Lachance (Richard Dreyfus) learns his childhood friend Chris Chamber has died, he recollects the time he, Chris, and two other boys searched for a rumored dead body, hoping to report it to the authorities and gain notoriety.<\/p>\n<p>The four young actors are phenomenal: Will Wheaton as young Gordie, Jerry O&#8217;Connell as Vern, Corey Feldman as Teddy, and especially Rivers Phoenix as Chris who skyrocketed to superstardom.<\/p>\n<p>Keifer Sutherland is great as the villainous Ace, while Rob Reiner proved he was capable of more than the light satire of\u00a0<em>This is Spinal Tap,\u00a0<\/em>setting the stage for a decade long run as a top flight director.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a Stephen King short story, this coming of age movie is a touchstone for every boy growing up in the 1980s and continues to resonate today. It&#8217;s influence, particularly the way characters relate to each other through popular culture and the serious opinions they have about decidedly unserious things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/a.ltrbxd.com\/resized\/film-poster\/4\/3\/3\/2\/0\/6\/433206-bugs-bunny-looney-tunes-all-star-50th-anniversary-0-1000-0-1500-crop.jpg?v=e84dfa22e1\" alt=\"Bugs Bunny\/Looney Tunes All-Star 50th Anniversary\" width=\"255\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0463931\/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1_tt_7_nm_0_in_0_q_Bugs%2520Bunns%252FLooney%2520Tunes%252050th\"><em>Bugs Bunny \/ Looney Tunes All-Star 50th Anniversary<\/em><\/a> (1986)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a huge fan of the &#8220;treating cartoon characters as real people&#8221; genre (think <em>Roger Rabbit<\/em>). I loved the meta commentary from 80s stars like Bill Murray, Cher, Chevy Chase, Molly Ringwald, Steve Martin, Penny Marshall and David Bowie reminiscing about their time working with the Looney gang.<\/p>\n<p>You can see how much these silly shorts played in shaping the humor of many of our brightest comedic minds.<\/p>\n<p>It may not be everyone&#8217;s favorite, but this is the kind of stuff I loved watching when I was a kid and I was blown away by the obvious care taken here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fvice-press.com%2Fcdn%2Fshop%2Ffiles%2Fstar-trek-4-voyage-home-poster-bob-peak.jpg%3Fv%3D1725543665%26width%3D1100&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=b5dee386ba576558f1315e1e7cb579b341f72564ee7948131fd0b514f1713bc7\" alt=\"Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Poster By Bob Peak | Vice Press\" width=\"287\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0092007\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still reeling from his resurrection in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_Trek_III:_The_Search_for_Spock\">previous film<\/a>, Mr. Spock is feeling his way back to the beloved Vulcan we know and love, allowing the writers to experiment with the series central relationship of Kirk, Bones, and Spock.<\/p>\n<p>Still on board a stolen Klingon vessel, the crew of the <em>Enterprise<\/em> return to earth to face the consequences of their actions, but find the planet under attack by an alien probe attempting to communicate with long extinct <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Humpback_whale\">humpback whales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a last ditch attempt to save their planet, they ricochet around the sun to go back in time and retrieve a pair of whales.<\/p>\n<p>A major departure from the usual <em>Star Trek<\/em> films, this features more humor and copious use of &#8220;colorful&#8221; language making it closer to the kinetic, tongue in cheek feel of the original series than the more serious films.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fflxt.tmsimg.com%2Fassets%2Fp9007_v_h9_ac.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=fcef62742a0d06f6305a3c48ad5abdbd353a3ae1b4c2b74ced799207b0131d28\" alt=\"Hannah and Her Sisters: Trailer 1 - Trailers &amp; Videos - Rotten Tomatoes\" width=\"499\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0091167\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">Hannah and Her Sisters<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hannah (Mia Farrow) is married to Elliot (Michael Caine) who&#8217;s having an affair with her sister Lee (Barbara Hershey). Meanwhile, Hannah&#8217;s neurotic ex-husband Mickey (Woody Allen) begins a tentative relationship with Hannah&#8217;s other sister, aspiring actress and former drug addict Holly (Dianne Wiest).<\/p>\n<p>Mickey&#8217;s personal epiphany during a screening of\u00a0<em>Duck Soup <\/em>is\u00a0one of the best scenes Allen has given us.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ensemble cast features numerous amusing cameos by Maureen O&#8217;Sullivan (as the mother of her real life daughter&#8217;s character), Max von Sydow, Sam Waterston, and Carrie Fisher, and a brief appearance by Allen&#8217;s future wife Soon-Yi gives the film a voyeuristic layer of intrigue.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not Allen&#8217;s best, but it&#8217;s one of his better films.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fbullesdeculture.com%2Fbdc-content%2Fuploads%2F2016%2F09%2Fmauvais-sang-affiche-1536x2048.jpg&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=9fc23d8cedea6e5b58239bdc657b0846204a9adf579bdaf09fbf10799e94214a\" alt=\"CRITIQUE &quot;Mauvais sang&quot; (1986) de Leos Carax - Bulles de Culture\" width=\"356\" height=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0091497\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Mauvais Sang<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this pseudo-science fiction film, a mysterious illness kills anyone who has sex without being in love, and the only known cure is locked in a vault.<\/p>\n<p>Two aging thieves recruit Alex (Denis Lavant) the son of a former colleague to help steal the serum.<\/p>\n<p>Although he&#8217;s in a relationship with Lise (Julie Delpy), Alex is drawn to Anna (Juliette Bincohe), the moll of one of the thieves.<\/p>\n<p>Director Leos Carax is a hyper-intellectual, French amalgam of Noah Baumbach, David Lynch, and Jim Jarmusch.\u00a0Delpy, Binoche, and Lavant are stellar. But when his birthday dinner is interrupted by the announcement of impending war, he vows to sacrifice everything he loves to avert disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Andrei Tarkovsky&#8217;s last film is a brilliant exploration of modern alienation and how we deal with the daily despair of life. We know death is approaching, but, most of the time, we&#8217;re content to be distracted by the latest bauble. They\u00a0crash the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Von_Steuben_Day\">Von Steuben Day Parade<\/a>\u00a0where Ferris\u00a0leads the crowd in a rousing edition of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twist_and_Shout\">Twist and Shout<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most film directors are lucky to create a single masterpiece, even fewer comedy directors do. Ripley&#8217;s make-shift relationship with Newt, a surviving orphaned child, forms the emotional core of the film and gives the character a motivation missing from the first film.<\/p>\n<p>In a rare dramatic turn, Paul Reiser is believable a greedy capitalist with the Weyland-Yutani Corporation; Lance Henrikesen is excellent Bishop, Ellen&#8217;s unlikely android ally; Bill Paxton is fun as a badass marine commander; and the\u00a0climatic battle with the alien queen is a master class in action cinema.<\/p>\n<p>This film solidified Weaver as a preeminent figure in science fiction and its success catapulted director James Cameron to new heights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/little_shop_of_horrors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-50 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/tenkmovies.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/little_shop_of_horrors.jpg?w=198\" alt=\"Little_shop_of_horrors\" width=\"241\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1)<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0091419\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Little Shop of Horrors<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) and Audrey are coworkers at Mushnik&#8217;s Flower Shop.\u00a0 The shop is struggling until Seymour showcases an unusual plant he bought from a rival Chinese florist. The only problem: this plant, which Seymour names &#8220;Audrey II,&#8221; is actually an alien which needs human blood to survive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The movie features\u00a0Steve Martin as a cruel dentist, Miriam Margoyles as his nurse, Bill Murray as his masochistic patient, and John Candy as a radio DJ.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Directed by Frank Oz, this surreal, dark comedy is an adaptation of\u00a0an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Shop_of_Horrors_(musical)\">off-Broadway musical<\/a>\u00a0inspired by a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Little_Shop_of_Horrors\">1960 film<\/a>.\u00a0 What sets it apart is the astounding energy in every scene.
