Underground<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1995)<\/p>\n

Blacky Popara and a small cadre\u00a0of associates\u00a0are trapped in an underground cave in Yugoslvia at the end of the second World War. \u00a0Blacky’s supposed best friend Marko Dren, a communist party official, tricks them into believing the war continues on the surface so they will make weapons they believe are used to fight the Nazi threat which he then sells for profit.<\/p>\n

Blacky eventually discovers\u00a0the deception and goes above ground to participate in the Cold War<\/a>, and become a Serbian patriot in the Yugoslav Wars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Emir Kusturica’s darkly comic portrait of the futility of war and dehumanization of its participants interprets the recent history of Yugoslavia as one continuous war.<\/p>\n

The surreal ending, a wedding where all of the characters (both dead and alive) reunite to celebrate, led critics such as Deborah Young to say this was what would happen “if Fellini had shot a war movie<\/a>.”\u00a0This is unfair to Kustirica who owes as much to the black comedy tradition\u00a0of anti-war films like\u00a0To Be or Not to Be\u00a0<\/em>(1942),\u00a0M*A*S*H<\/em>*<\/em>\u00a0(1970), Catch-22\u00a0<\/em>(1970), and Slaughterhouse-Five<\/em>\u00a0(1972).<\/p>\n

Muscle Shoals<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(2013)<\/p>\n

This documentary highlights the music\u00a0studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0argues there’s a tangible connection between location and music.<\/p>\n

There were studios all over\u00a0the country in\u00a0the late 1960s.\u00a0 Why\u00a0were Sound City<\/a>\u00a0in Los Angeles\u00a0and FAME Studios<\/a>\u00a0in Alabama\u00a0successful while others failed? Was there something about the locations of these studios which positioned them for success?\u00a0Could The Rolling Stones\u00a0have successfully recorded in Sound City? Would Nirvana have made it working with The Swampers in Muscle Shoals?<\/p>\n

This movie is a part of a mini trend over the last year of documentaries focused on lesser known players\u00a0and aspects of the history of rock and roll. \u00a0This and\u00a0Sound\u00a0City <\/em>(2013)\u00a0focus on the studios, while\u00a020\u00a0Feet from Stardom<\/em>\u00a0(2013), which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary<\/a>, focuses on the career of a handful of background singers.\u00a0 Watching them is like an advanced class in the history of rock and\u00a0roll, an art form now\u00a0old enough to have forgotten its past.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
