Best Makeup and Hairstyling<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: A Man Called Ove. <\/em>Actual winner: Suicide Squad<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I didn’t want Suicide Squad <\/em>to win and picked against it for spite. My mistake.<\/p>\n

Best Cinematography<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land. <\/em>Actual winner: La La Land.<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Production Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land. <\/em>Actual winner: La La Land<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I thought the beginning freeway scene was enough to justify this win.<\/p>\n

Best Sound Mixing<\/strong><\/p>\n

My predicton: Rogue One<\/em>. Actual winner: Hacksaw Ridge<\/em><\/p>\n

I’m clueless about this category, and I didn’t think Hacksaw Ridge<\/em> would win anything.<\/p>\n

Best Sound Editing<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Arrival<\/em>. Actual winner: Arrival<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This category is predisposed to loud, sci-fi type films.<\/p>\n

Best Film Editing<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land<\/em>. Actual winner: Hacksaw Ridge<\/em><\/p>\n

I didn’t see Hacksaw Ridge<\/em> getting this level of support.<\/p>\n

Best Costume Design<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land. <\/em>Actual winner: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I thought La La Land<\/em> would have down ballot strength. I was wrong. <\/em><\/p>\n

Best Original Song<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: “City of Stars” from La La Land<\/em>. Actual winner: “City of Stars.”<\/p>\n

Best Original Score<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land. <\/em>Actual winner: La La Land<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It’s been awhile since a film was so tied to its score. One of the easier picks of the night.<\/p>\n

Best Animated Short<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Borrowed Time. <\/em>Actual winner: Piper. <\/em><\/p>\n

I knew there would be a Pixar connection, but I failed to account for how many people saw Piper<\/em> before Finding Dory<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Best Live Action Short<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Le Femme et le TGV<\/em>. Actual winner: Sing. <\/em><\/p>\n

I enjoyed Sing<\/em>, but I thought it was a little slight. I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Best Documentary Short<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Joe’s Violin<\/em>. Actual winner: The White Helmets<\/em><\/p>\n

I thought the plethora of refugee stuff would cancel each other out, but I was wrong.<\/p>\n

Best Adapted Screenplay<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Moonlight<\/em>. Actual winner: Moonlight.<\/em><\/p>\n

Best Original Screenplay<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land<\/em>. Actual winner: Manchester by the Sea<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I thought La La Land<\/em> was gonna sail through here, but it’s unusual for someone to win Best Director and Best Screenplay in the same year. The two areas are very jealous and antagonistic of each other. My guess is, the writers knew Chazelle was going to win Director, so they went somewhere else.<\/p>\n

Best Documentary<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: O.J.: Made in America<\/em>. Actual winner: O.J.: Made in America<\/em><\/p>\n

This was a powerhouse category this year, but OJ<\/em> was a towering achievement and obvious winner.<\/p>\n

Best Animated Feature<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Zootopia<\/em>. Actual winner: Zootopia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I think most voters don’t really follow these films, but are largely swayed by box office results. My strategy worked this year.<\/p>\n

Best Foreign Film<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: The Salesmen<\/em>. Actual winner: The Salesman<\/em><\/p>\n

As soon as the controversy over President Trump’s travel ban began, you knew the Academy would use this category to make a statement. It didn’t hurt that The Salesman <\/em>is a very good movie and Farhadi’s won before.<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actress<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction (and everyone else’s): Viola Davis. Actual winner: Viola Davis.<\/p>\n

Best Supporting Actor<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Mahershala Ali. Actual winner: Mahershala Ali.<\/p>\n

Best Actress<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Emma Stone. Actual winner: Emma Stone.<\/p>\n

Best Actor<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Casey Affleck. Actual winner: Casey Affleck.<\/p>\n

Casey was the early frontrunner. Denzel closed, but it wasn’t enough.<\/p>\n

Best Director<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: Damien Chazelle. Actual winner: Damien Chazelle.<\/p>\n

Best Picture<\/strong><\/p>\n

My prediction: La La Land. <\/em>Actual winner: Moonlight<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I noted Friday I could feel momentum building for Moonlight<\/em>, but I mistakenly thought there wasn’t enough time. I thought La La Land<\/em> was in a better position and falsely thought it was back to the norm of Best Director and Best Picture closely tied together, but it seems the Academy may have decided to use the two awards to spread the love out.<\/p>\n

So to recap, I predicted 16 of the 24 categories.<\/p>\n

I thought La La Land <\/em>would be the big winner and it did win 6, but I thought it would sneak two more. I misjudged the support of Hacksaw Ridge<\/em>. The shorts categories are a crap shoot (even if you’ve seen all of them).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
