Heart of Glass<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1976)<\/p>\n A German community relies on the unique glass it produces for its income and identity.\u00a0 When the old man who knows how to create\u00a0the glass dies, the leader of the town tries to replicate\u00a0his process\u00a0with little success.<\/p>\n Hias, a local fortune-teller (based on Bavarian prophet M\u00fchlhiasl<\/a>), predicts the glass factory will\u00a0be destroyed in a fire.<\/p>\n The end\u00a0of the film is a\u00a0digressive, symbolic poem which I think morphs Hias’s prediction into a universal warning, but I’m not sure what the warning is about.<\/p>\n From the mysterious Bruno S. in The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (<\/em>1974) and Stroszek<\/em> (1977)\u00a0to the despicable Klaus Kinski\u00a0in Aguirre, the Wrath of God<\/em> (1972), Nosferatu\u00a0the Vampyre<\/em> (1979),\u00a0 and Fitzcarraldo<\/em> (1982), it’s obvious director Werner Herzog likes odd, distinctive characters played by odd, distinctive men.\u00a0Even his documentary work focuses on unusual men, such as\u00a0Timothy Treadwell<\/a>.<\/p>\n In this film, he gives us an entire village full of outcasts and oddities, and hypnotized his cast and gave them their lines in a hypnotic state.<\/p>\n I liked this odd, entrancing film, but I cannot articulate why.\u00a0 It’s a languid portrait of a foreign, yet recognizable world; it’s a beautiful, loving vision of a people and a past I’m not sure existed; and it’s one of the most accessible of Herzog’s enigmatic films.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Heart of Glass\u00a0(1976) A German community relies on the unique glass it produces for its income and identity.\u00a0 When the old man who knows how to create\u00a0the glass dies, the leader of the town tries to replicate\u00a0his process\u00a0with little success.
