This attention brings Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) to town, convinced Tom is Joey Cusack, a former associate in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irish_Mob\">Irish Mob<\/a>. The truth of\u00a0Tom&#8217;s past threatens to destroy his family.<\/p>\n<p>To his credit, Viggo Mortensen has used the success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_(film_series)\">Lord of the Rings<\/a>\u00a0to focus on smaller films, more personal films.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Bello who plays Tom&#8217;s wife, Edie, is a solid background performer but has yet to breakthrough to more mainstream success.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Truman_Show\">Christof<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pollock_(film)\">Jackson Pollock<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Game_Change_(film)\">John McCain<\/a>, Ed Harris is always dependable, including as a mob enforcer here.<\/p>\n<p>William Hurt was nominated for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/78th_Academy_Awards\">Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor<\/a>, but it feels like the nomination was given\u00a0out of\u00a0respect for his previous work.\u00a0 He&#8217;s underused and didn&#8217;t make a connection with me in his brief role as Richie Cusack.<\/p>\n<p>David Cronenberg established a distinct visual style in a series of existential horror films in the 1980s including\u00a0<em>Videodrome<\/em> (1983) and\u00a0<em>The Fly\u00a0<\/em>(1986). His later career has been less focused on disturbing visual effects, but the underlying themes are the same: existential angst and the overwhelming desire for identity and purpose.<\/p>\n<p>This is a decent movie about a man trying to escape from the actions of\u00a0his past, but doesn&#8217;t have anything fresh to say.\u00a0 Cronenberg&#8217;s earlier films were often messy, but at least they were interesting; this listless film doesn&#8217;t feel like it was made with a lot of passion, although I&#8217;m curious to read the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_History_of_Violence_(comics)\">original graphic novel<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A History of Violence\u00a0(2005) When one of the waitresses working for Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is threatened, Tom kills her attackers and becomes a local celebrity.
