I used to spend a lot of time reading about movies I ‘d never seen. At some point, my wife suggested I try watching them. To her regret, I did.
I watched all the Best Picture winners, then Roger Ebert’s Great Movies. I discovered websites full of lists of movies I needed to see (icheckmovies.com).
I decided to watch one movie every day for a year, then I tried to watch one thousand in a year. As I settled into my thirties, I set an arbitrary, but attainable goal: ten thousand movies before my fortieth birthday.
I watched bad movies, cult films, family films, and horror films.
I watched silent films, short films, super hero blockbusters and long documentaries about everything from OJ to the Holocaust.
At some point, I started ranking them. To make my ranking as accurate as possible, I rewatched every movie I had seen prior to 2011.
From January 1, 2011, to my fortieth birthday (August 6, 2019), I watched and ranked 10, 354 movies.
You can find my ranked list here.
